Association of publication with taxonomy

The present system allows only a few taxonomy links to be built. I suspect that there is a character limit to the auto-complete box. The auto-complete box is the only practical method to work with a moderately large taxonomy. We really need a better method than this and it adds to the need for the auto-tag function. The keywords field in the publication node is of limited size, so needs to be an expanded text box for monographic publications. Note that the information is there, so highlight all and copy will bring the whole list onto the clipboard.

Auto-tag function

We really, really need to be able to create tags from the keyword fields in the biblio entries. This is essential so that when a taxonomy is modified (which is the purpose of the scratchpad) it can build the tags from existing key words.

Biblio link in Tinytax

When linking a taxonomy term to an authority citation in the biblio module, it is most helpful to see the author name and year, rather than the paper title.  Having selected the reference it would be a good check to see the full citation as well as the biblio reference number.

Cite-me button output

The formatted citation should be presented in PubMed tagged field format (or similar) that can be incorporated into a reference manager. EndNote supports two appropriate content types, 'web page' and 'electronic article', although in the latter case we would be stretching the idea of an electronic journal to include Scratchpads.

Contributor's Terms and Conditions of Use

As most of you are probably aware, Dave drafted the document "Maintainer's Terms and Conditions of Use" which has to be signed by maintainers of EDIT scratchpads. By email Dave and I discussed whether EDIT should also offer a document about "Contributor's Terms and Conditions of Use. As this is a general WP6 topic, we want to open this discussion to all.

I suggested to offer maintainers a separate, different T&C document, which is tailored for the relationship between maintainer and contributor, and which would be optional for the maintainer to use.

Editing taxonomy term list

As the taxonomy gets larger it becomes difficultto locate a specific entry in the term list for editing.  Coule we add a link from the taxon panel page to edit the term?

Image search on the web

Why do we use Yahoo image search? Try a search for Calyptotricha (a genus of ciliates). Yahoo finds one image of por quality. Google finds lots including 4 from the NHM web site. Not a complaint, but a question.

Individual panel atribution

It would be valuable if we could show who contributed particular images, perhaps as a datum on the higher magnification. If someone copies the image, then the original owner's licence require attribution. Similarly with any contributed element.

Managing keywords

We need to clarify how to associate specific citations with taxonomic terms.

Panels Image Identification

It would be really useful if the user could identify the taxon of an image in a panel. For example, in the dungbeetle site I was looking for a nice panels page for illustration. I kept getting empty hits on the classification, so I clicked on 'Coleoptera' and got a bunch of nice images in the panel. Unfortunately I couldn't home in on them because I didn't know what they were.

There is also a need to be able to carry image meta-data, particularly attribution information, with the image on download.
